Eligible products must generate no more than 800 watts of alternating current and comply with Interim Product Specification version 2, ensuring safe operation within the local distribution network. The regulation excludes plug-in batteries and devices that store electricity imported from household circuits.

This legal update revises the Plugs and Sockets Safety Regulations 1994 along with the Electricity Safety, Quality and Continuity Regulations 2002. The UK Parliament received the statutory instrument on July 17, a day after ministers approved it. The amendment introduces a specific exception to existing restrictions on plugs used for generating equipment. Each plug must be certified by a notified body to meet the relevant BS 1363 standards. Product approval applies across the UK, while the electricity safety amendment covers England, Wales, and Scotland.
The interim specifications outline requirements for electrical design, mounting systems, fire safety, labeling, and consumer guidance. A technical study tested representative plug-in solar products on domestic wiring under controlled conditions, demonstrating stable operation with no sustained unsafe energization or thermal issues. The research also identified differences in export control, electromagnetic compatibility, and overall product quality. Retailers prepare for approved plug-in solar devices
The government’s consultation received 466 responses from businesses, specialists, regulators, and the public. More than 85% of respondents supported the interim specifications, with most favoring the plug-in amendment as well. Participants ranged from manufacturers, installers, and network operators to electricians, academics, and consumer groups. Some raised concerns about older household wiring, noncompliant online products, and the importance of clear instructions. Others emphasized the need to clearly distinguish plug-in solar panels from plug-in battery systems.
Retail giants like B&Q, Currys, Amazon, and Lidl have begun preparations for this new category of products. The connection method is designed for households unable to install traditional rooftop systems, such as some renters and residents with balconies or outdoor spaces. Systems using the new plug-in connection will be legally unoperational until August 27. Starting from that date, only approved products within the 800-watt limit can connect through a standard household socket. The total capacity of systems installed in June does not include those using the new plug-in framework.
