BRUSSELS, BELGIUM / RankWire.AI / – U.S. State Department has revised its travel warning for Belgium, urging Americans to exercise heightened caution due to concerns over crime, terrorism, and civil unrest. Issued on July 23, the advisory maintains Belgium at Level 2 on the department’s four-tier system. The update emphasizes crime and unrest as notable hazards and modifies the summary of risks, but it does not advise travelers to avoid visiting Belgium. Level 2 encourages visitors to be more vigilant and to consult official safety information prior to traveling.

US updates Belgium travel advisory over crime and unrest
Belgium remains at Level 2 under updated US travel guidance on crime and unrest.

According to the advisory, petty crimes such as purse snatching and pickpocketing are frequent in popular tourist destinations. Foreign visitors are often targeted for theft, including electronic gadgets and valuables stolen from vehicles. The State Department also warns about robberies and thefts involving electronics, as well as theft from parked cars. High-risk areas include major cities, restaurants, train stations, bus stops, trams, and the Brussels metro during nighttime hours. Travelers are advised to keep personal items secure, carry minimal cash and identification, and stay vigilant in crowded environments.

The advisory specifically notes a rise in bag thefts on trains, especially along the Brussels-Amsterdam route, where thieves frequently target lightweight bags stored on overhead racks. Passengers are urged to keep their cash, passports, and valuables within reach and to take extra precautions. Motorists are advised to lock vehicle doors, close windows, and avoid leaving belongings visible inside parked cars. Belgian Federal Police warn that thieves often work in groups, employing tactics like crowding, bumping into victims, or staging distractions to steal wallets, phones, and travel bags.

Focus Increased on Crime and Transportation Hazards

Belgium’s terrorism section indicates that violent attacks and related threats continue to pose a concern. Public events, hotels, restaurants, religious sites, schools, parks, shopping districts, and transportation hubs are identified as potential targets. The guidance highlights that terrorists and sympathizers may aim at U.S. citizens abroad. Currently, Belgium’s Coordination Unit for Threat Analysis assesses the national threat level at Level 3, classifying it as serious. On their four-point scale, officials consider a Level 3 threat as possible and likely.

The revised advisory also emphasizes the importance of vigilance during demonstrations and strikes. While many protests are peaceful, they can disrupt transport and essential services. The State Department notes protests may be triggered by political or economic grievances, holidays, or major events. Law enforcement routinely monitors such gatherings, and officials recommend travelers avoid large crowds. It is advised to check local updates, heed traffic alerts, and modify plans if public transportation experiences delays or cancellations.

Preparation and Vigilance Recommended for Travelers

U.S. officials suggest enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program, known as STEP, before or during visits. This service delivers alerts from the U.S. Embassy in Brussels and facilitates contact during emergencies. Americans are also encouraged to review entry requirements, local laws, and health directives. U.S. tourists can stay up to 90 days visa-free, provided their passports are valid for at least three months beyond their planned departure from the Schengen zone.

Travelers are advised to remain alert in popular tourist spots and around banks or ATMs. It is recommended to stay informed through local sources and know how to reach emergency services. Belgium’s emergency numbers are 112 for life-threatening situations across Europe and 101 for local police. The U.S. Embassy in Brussels offers consular support. The July update maintained the advisory at Level 2, adding references to crime and unrest in the summary for travelers planning visits to Belgium.
