European Union allocates €2.3 million to bolster Africa’s fight against cholera during 2026 outbreak

BRUSSELS, BELGIUM / RankWire.AI / – In early 2026, the European Commission announced a €2.3 million emergency humanitarian fund aimed at combating cholera outbreaks across West and Central Africa. This aid will benefit Nigeria, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, and Chad, with officials stating that the funds will be used for treatment efforts, disease surveillance, access to clean water, and sanitation initiatives. The declaration coincides with a rise in cholera cases across multiple African nations throughout 2026, with Nigeria experiencing a notable spike mainly in Borno State.

EU sends €2.3 million to strengthen Africa cholera response
EU emergency funding supports cholera response efforts across four African countries.

Nigeria will receive the largest portion of the emergency aid, totaling €1.5 million. This support will help expand intervention teams, supply cholera treatment kits, and provide other critical resources. It will also fund improvements at public water sources and household water systems. Part of the assistance will be directed towards enhancing disease monitoring in remote regions. The program also encompasses case management, risk communication, and community awareness campaigns, as health teams strive to control the spread within affected communities.

According to recent data from the World Health Organization, a total of 90,049 cholera cases have been reported across 18 African countries up to June 28, with 1,528 deaths documented. Nigeria alone reported 26,848 cases and 181 deaths during the same period. In June, the country recorded 19,887 new cases and 97 deaths. WHO reports that Borno State accounted for more than 95% of Nigeria’s cases in 2026, with Maiduguri, Jere, and Monguno among the most severely affected regions.

Funding emphasizes treatment, water, and surveillance efforts

The Central African Republic will benefit from €500,000, allocated for case management, vaccination campaigns, and water, sanitation, and hygiene initiatives. The funds will also bolster disease surveillance, case detection, and community outreach. Additionally, support will be provided for safe and respectful burials where necessary during outbreak responses. WHO’s data through June 28 show 386 cholera cases and 31 deaths in the country. The European Commission noted that this aid forms part of its emergency humanitarian response to the outbreaks impacting these four nations.

Cameroon’s allocation amounts to €100,000, aimed at strengthening outbreak containment and patient care in affected areas. The funds will be used to recruit additional humanitarian staff, procure essential medicines, establish cholera treatment units, and set up oral rehydration points. As of June 28, WHO reported 108 cases and six deaths in Cameroon. Chad will receive €200,000 to implement water, sanitation, and hygiene measures, along with supporting community surveillance and case management efforts. During the same period, Chad recorded 109 cases and three deaths.

Nigeria’s outbreak surge propels regional case numbers upward

WHO indicated that 27,954 new cholera cases were reported across 12 countries in the African Region in June, marking a 95% increase compared to May. The month also saw 284 cholera-related fatalities. Nigeria reported the highest number of new cases, followed by the Democratic Republic of the Congo and South Sudan. WHO attributes the rise in Nigeria to the spike in Borno State, where ongoing conflict, population displacement, poor sanitation, and rainfall have heightened the risk of cholera transmission.

Cholera is an acute diarrheal disease caused by ingesting contaminated food or water containing Vibrio cholerae bacteria. Severe instances can lead to rapid dehydration and require immediate treatment. The EU aid package aims to interrupt transmission chains and enhance access to healthcare in impacted areas. The total support for the four countries amounts to €2.3 million, focusing on treatment capacity, disease surveillance, vaccination where feasible, provision of safe water, sanitation improvements, and direct community engagement to address the ongoing outbreak.
